Last month the National Marine Biological Library supported students from the Plymouth branch of Eat That Frog. Eat That Frog provides specialist post-16 and adult training, enabling learners to develop their skills and overcome barriers. One of their key programmes is to provide post-16 students with work placement experiences in a variety of professional fields, and the NMBL was keen to partner with them for the first time.
The Southward Reading Room has recently undergone a small update – the handmade quilt has been moved to the main stairwell and a new display screen has been installed to increase engagement opportunities. With the installation, came the need to create informative displays; students Joe and Layton were tasked with creating an engaging display for the Reading Room to highlight some of the lesser known about items from the MBA’s Object Collection.

They focused on a Fuller’s calculator, a galvanometer and a Cambridge rocker microtome.

These objects would likely have been supporting historic MBA research and we wanted to bring them to the attention of current researchers as well as the Members and students that use the library. We think Joe and Layton did a fantastic job with the display and we hope to participate in future work placement opportunities for future Eat That Frog students.
