This multi-faceted project focusses on how short-term extreme climatic events, such as marine heatwaves and anomalous storm and freshening events, impact coastal marine ecosystems. The research will examine (1) trends in the frequency and magnitude of these events; (2) the impacts of extreme events on marine populations, communities and ecosystems; and (3) their likely significance in the near future, given that the frequency of extreme climatic events is predicted to increase under anthropogenic climate change. The project is funded through a NERC Independent Research Fellowship and a NERC International Opportunities Fund.
