This project aims to develop molecular genetic tools in the haptophyte algae. Strains will be selected that exhibit rapid and robust growth in laboratory culture as candidate model organism for the development of genetic tools within the haptophytes. Our approach will be to develop robust transformation protocols for haptophytes. We will develop a genetic toolbox to allow researchers to overexpress or localise genes of interest. We will then focus on developing a gene editing system based to allow targeted knock out of specific genes.
