Dan Smale
Dan is a community ecologist with broad research interests and a particular focus on understanding how global environmental change is influencing the structure and functioning of coastal marine ecosystems. Dan's research falls into 3 broad themes: (1) the impacts of rapid environmental change on kelp forest ecosystems; (2) the responses of marine populations and communities to both long-term climate change and short-term extreme climatic events, such as marine heatwaves; and (3) the spread and impacts of non-native species in coastal marine ecosystems. He uses a combination of laboratory-based experiments, manipulative field experiments and field-based observations to better understand responses of coastal marine ecosystems to contemporary stressors.
