Isobel cole

Isobel is a BBSRC SWbio PhD student investigating the function of the unusual antioxidant ergothioneine in plants and algae, with the MBA and University of Exeter, supervised by Dr Glen Wheeler (MBA), Dr Katherine Helliwell (MBA) and Professor Nick Smirnoff (Exeter). Her project involves determining the occurrence, synthesis, and functions of the metabolite through biochemical and physiological characterisation of ergothioneine mutants.

She graduated with a first in BSc (Hons) Environmental Biotechnology from the University of Plymouth. During this, she volunteered on algal projects at Plymouth Marine Laboratory and her dissertation focused on evaluating the role of glutathione peroxidase in tardigrades.
