To represent the views of the wider marine biological community, the MBA regularly contributes evidence and advice provided by our Members to government consultations and parliamentary inquiries. We seek to collate the opinions and expertise of our Members to provide a clear, independent and unified voice to decision-makers on behalf of the marine biological community.

UN Decade of Ocean Science societal outcomes

The MBA submitted a contribution on societal outcomes to the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Ocean Decade, in October 2019.

  

Highly Protected Marine Areas

The MBA responded to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)’s call for evidence for the Highly Protected Marine Areas inquiry, in October 2019.

   

Marine strategy part one: UK updated assessment and Good Environmental Status

The MBA responded to Defra's consulation on the UK’s updated assessment of the progress made towards achieving Good Environmental Status for UK Seas and the proposed objectives, targets and indicators that will be used for the next 6-year cycle, in June 2019.

  

South West Marine Plan

The MBA provided a written response to the Marine Managament Organisation on the South West Marine Plan Iteration 3 Engagement consultation, in March 2019.

  

Guidance on the Implementation of Plan S

The MBA provided a written submission to the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMAREST) following the consultation on Guidance on the Implementation of Plan S, in February 2019

  

2018

Sustainable Seas inquiry 

With input from Members, the MBA submitted a written response for the Sustainable Seas Inquiry to the House of Commons Science Environmental Audit Committee, in May 2018.

  

European Ocean Observing System Strategy and Implementation Plan

The MBA provided a written response to the European Ocean Observing System (EOOS) on their Strategy and Implementation Plan in June 2018.

  

Environmental Governance after Brexit

The MBA responded to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)’s consultation on Environmental Principles and Governance after the United Kingdom leaves the European Union, in May 2018.

    

Sustainable fisheries for future generations​

The MBA responded in September 2018, to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)’s consultation concerning fisheries regulation after Brexit. The proposal sets forth plans for a future Fisheries Bill.

Marine Protected Areas Revisted

Dr Matt Frost, Head of Policy at the MBA, is quoted in the Tenth Report of Session 2016–17 after providing oral evidence to the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee in 2016.

Marine Protected Areas Revisted

The Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) invited Dr Matt Frost, Head of Policy at the MBA, to provide oral evidence in connection with the Committee’s inquiry into Marine Protection Areas.

  

EU membership  and UK science

The MBA provided comment to the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee concerning implications and opportunities for science and research after leaving the European Union, in August 2016.

  

2015

Marine Conservation Zones Tranche 2

The MBA responded to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)’s consultation on Sites Proposed for Designation in the Second Tranche of Marine Conservation Zones, in April 2015. 

   

Marine Strategy Framework Directive

The MBA responded to Defra, the Northern Ireland executive, the Scottish government and the Welsh government consulation on the UK’s proposed programme of measures to maintain or achieve Good Environmental Status (GES) in its seas by 2020. 

  

Relationship between EU Membership and the Effectiveness of Science, Research and Innovation in the UK

The MBA provided a written response to the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee's inquiry into the Relationship between EU Membership and the Effectiveness of Science, Research and Innovation in the UK, in November 2015.

  

2014

Long-Term Capital Investment in Science & Research 

The MBA responded to the UK Government's consultation on Creating the Future: A 2020 Vision for Science & Research, in June 2014. 

    

Marine Strategy Framework Directive: Proposals for UK Marine Monitoring Programmes

The MBA responded to Defra, the Northern Ireland executive, the Scottish government and the Welsh government consulation on the MSFD's Proposals for UK Marine Monitoring Programmes, in March 2014.

  

Marine Protected Areas

Dr Matt Frost, Head of Policy at the MBA, provided oral evidence to the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee regarding Marine Protected Areas in February 2014. Written evidence was also provided. 

    

2013

Scottish Marine Regions Order

The MBA responded to the Scottish Government's consultation on the Draft Scottish Marine Regions Order, February 2013. 

    

Marine Conservation Zones

The MBA provided a written response to DEFRA's consultation on proposals for designation of Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) in English inshore, and English and Welsh offshore waters, in May 2013. 

    

Scottish Marine Litter Strategy

The MBA responded to the Scottish Government's consultation on the Draft Scottish Marine Litter Strategy, in July 2013.

  

2012

Aquaculture and Fisheries Bill

In February 2012, the MBA responded to the Scottish Government's consultation on the Aquaculture and Fisheries Bill.

    

Marine Strategy Framework Directive

The MBA provided feedback to DEFRA's consultation regarding the UK's Initial Assessment and Proposals for Good Environmental Status, in June 2012. 

  

Investigation into Marine Science

Dr Frost, Head of Policy at the Mba, provided oral evidence to the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee in December 2012. The MBA also provided a written response to the Committee's review of Marine Science. 

  

2011

Special Areas of Conservation in UK Offshore Waters

The MBA responded to the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC)'s consultation on the selection of three UK offshore Special Areas of Conservation.

  

Scottish Marine Regions: Defining their boundaries

The MBA responded to the Scottish Government's consultation on the Scottish Marine Regions: Defining their boundaries, in February 2011. 

     

2010

Marine Strategy Framework Directive

The MBA provided feedback to DEFRA's consultation regarding the putting in place of a legal framework for implementation, in January 2010.

    

Marine Protected Area in the British Indian Ocean Territory

The MBA provided a written response to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on their consultations on whether to establish a Marine Protected Area in the British Indian Ocean Territory (Chagos Archipelago), in  March 2010. 

  

Proposed marine shellfish farm in Lyme Bay

The MBA responded to The Crown Estate' s consultation for a proposed an offshore marine shellfish farm in Lyme Bay, UK, in March 2010. 

  

A Marine Planning System for England

The MBA provided a written response to DEFRA on their consultation on a Marine Planning System for England, October 2010.
