Business Research Support Officer

Job purpose:

This post supports the MBA contribution to the Marine Business Technology Centre (MBTC) consortium, and is funded through the European Regional Development Fund. It is an opportunity for a motivated and commercially minded individual to help develop a portfolio of collaborative industry projects in conjunction with researchers and professional service staff of the MBTC.  

The MBTC project is led by Plymouth City Council in collaboration with the Marine Biological Association, Plymouth Marine Laboratory, Plymouth University and the University of Exeter. The objective of the project is to stimulate and support business innovation through a partnership programme including access to technical expertise and facilities, research support and knowledge exchange within the partnership.    

Background

The Marine Biological Association (www.mba.ac.uk) is an independent research institute carrying out leading-edge research in fundamental and strategic areas of marine biology.  As one of the world’s longest running learned societies (founded in 1884) the MBA is dedicated to promoting research into our oceans and the life that they support. Many eminent scientists, including twelve Nobel Prize winners, have conducted their research at the MBA’s famous Citadel Hill laboratory. With our Royal Charter and over 1600 members in 37 countries worldwide, we have the mandate to provide an authoritative and independent voice for the international marine biological community.

The role

The post holder will work alongside the marine business community in the region, supporting applied research, technology development and innovation. They will be a member of a project team, identify businesses requiring support, undertake organisational needs analysis and apply their knowledge and expertise, as well as that of research colleagues at the MBA, to deliver solutions to industrial challenges. They will be required to rapidly develop a detailed understanding of the expertise and assets of the MBA and build networks across marine sector SME’s in the region.

Salary and benefits

  • Salary £22,017 to £25,482, dependant on experience
  • The MBA will contribute 10% of your basic salary into a defined benefits pension scheme.. You are required to make a 3% minimum contribution.  You can contribute over the 3% minimum and the MBA will match up to a maximum of 5%

Skills and experience

Essential

The successful candidate will have an interest in engaging with businesses to support Research and Development activities and a general interest in marine biology/biotechnology.

  • Able to work independently to proactively discover businesses, assess their R,D&I needs and propose workable solutions;
  • An ability to work as part of a team (collaborating with researchers, data scientists, research assistants and businesses);
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Organised and efficient with excellent record keeping ability.

Desirable

  • Practical knowledge in one of more areas of marine environmental monitoring, sensors/instrumentation, data processing and visualisation, biotechnology;
  • Experience contributing to, or conducting, basic scientific research.

The post holder will be based at the Marine Biological Association of the UK in Plymouth, and will be required to spend time each week at the MBTC Plymouth HQ (Oceansgate) as well as travel to meetings, workshops and business locations as required.

The position is fixed term for 15 months. Starting date April 2020.
