I have upgraded to Endnote 9 or Xfrom Endnote 7 and am not sure how libraries are upgraded or whether I need to keep my original Endnote 7 libraries after I have converted them?

When you open a library created with Endnote 7 in Endnote 9 or X, EndNote will warn that the selected library was created with an older version, and will ask for permission to convert it. Click OK to convert the library. Name the new library and click Save . The conversion makes a copy of the original library in the version 8/9 format, and leaves the original library intact which you can delete if you wish.

Note: The conversion also creates a .Data file which must always be copied with the Endnote 9 library, if you are copying the library to another drive on your computer. In Endnote 10 you can create a compressed library containing both files.

I am having problems copying my Endnote 9 or Xlibrary. Why?

The conversion also creates a .Data file which must always be copied with the Endnote library, if you are copying the library to another drive on your computer. In Endnote 10 you can create a compressed library containing both files.

Endnote 9 has asked me to select a filter when downloading/importing records from Web of Science.

In Endnote 9, you may be asked to select a filter.  Choose the filter ISI-CE from the list and then click on Endnote import .

Endnote has asked me to select a filter when downloading/importing records from Science Direct.

In Endnote 8: When direct exporting records with Endnote 8, you are required to select the corresponding filters: select the "RefMan (RIS)"  filter.  Endnote 8.0.2 is able to import without needing to select a filter, but in some instances you are still required.

In Endnote 9 select the reference manager (RIS) filter.

I still can't import records properly from WoS or Science Direct, what should I do?

Go to the edit menu, preferences, and select the folder locations option. Make sure the folder location is set to C:\program files\Endnote 9\Filters for the filters folder. Click the "Endnote defaults" button and make sure it is set to that folder. If you download any filters, put them in that folder, so they show up on your list of choices.

If the above doesn't work, your folder locations are correct and you are not prompted to select a filter, it is possible that the preferences may have been corrupted during the upgrade from Endnote 7. Instructions for re-installing Endnote 9 are here, please note that you may need to contact your local IT support for assistance.

Which filter do I use for Libweb?

Select the Endnote Import option.

There are lots of filters for ASFA, which do I use?

This is because the ASFA database is available in different formats and from different providers, choose ASFA ( CSA ) to import from ASFA Illumina.

Endnote commands are not available from the Tools menu in Word.

If EndNote commands still do not appear under Word's Tools menu, do the following:

From Word's Tools menu, choose Options . Click the File Locations tab to check the current Startup folder. Make sure this folder actually exists. If it does not, click Modify and select the valid

Word Startup folder. Once the folder is set, re-run Setup as described in the installation instructions.

When word processor support is correctly installed, EndNote commands appear under the Tools menu in Word.

I have bibliographies created using other reference management software. Can I import these references into Endnote?

Yes you can. For files created in ProCite Download the ProCite output style “RIS-EndNote.pos” fromthe “Support and Services” section of the ProCite Web site at www.procite.com. Use this output style to print from ProCite to a text file. Then, use EndNote's ProCite (RIS) import filter to import the file.

For files created in Reference Manager export the references in RIS format Reference Manager to a text file. Then, use EndNote's RefMan (RIS) import filter to import the resulting file.

I have a copy of a paper for review which tries to open an Endnote library when I open it/edit it. What is the problem?

Each formatted citation in a Word document is surrounded by field codes which contain full reference information (also referred to as the Traveling Library. To send a final, formatted document to a publisher, you should Remove Field Codes to save the formatted citations and bibliography as text. In the example above, the formats had not been removed and Endnote was trying to open a library which did not exist.

Why don't my references imported from Libweb or Blackwell STM display properly in my Endnote X library?

The software that was loaded did not contain the correct version of the Endnote Import filter. You need to replace the existing Endnote import filter with the filter available here. Download the zipped filter, unzip the filter and paste it into "C:\Program Files\EndNote X\Filters" when the software is loaded.
