How do I?

Accessing Science Direct  

Science Direct is available from http://www.sciencedirect.com or click here to link straight to aquatic sciences journals 

Science Direct is an internet database covering 1,700 electronic journals, abstracts databases and reference works. 

Under our licence you can: 

  • Browse tables of contents of over 1,700 journals
  • Search all information in the database 
  • View abstracts of over 3 million articles 
  • View full text of articles in journals from 1999-

Registration 

Without registering a user name and password you can browse e-journals and search. By registering a user name and password you are able to: 

  • Save searches
  • Create search alerts (current awareness), table of contents alerts and citation alerts 
  • Create a favourite journals list 
  • Use the search history option to combine searches.  

To register click on the link in the top right hand corner of the page. By logging in each time you use Science Direct you will have access to a wider range of facilities. 

Journals 

Click on the journals button to display a list of journals. You can then browse by selecting a subject area, your favourite journals or by selecting subscribed journals and/or non-subscribed journals. Aquatic Sciences journals are listed under Agricultural and Biological Sciences. (Click here to link straight to aquatic sciences journals)

  • Click on the relevant letter of the alphabet to display titles beginning with that letter.
  • A green box next to the title means that there is a subscription to it and you can access the full text in either Pdf format or as a full text + links document. 
  • Click on the title to access the e-journal. 
  • If you have registered you can create a list of favourite journals which can then be accessed from the journals page. 
  • Please note that the NMBL does not hold the print versions of all the journals available through Science Direct. 

Alerts 

Search Alerts (Current Awareness)

1. To save your search as an alert, click on save as search alert on the results page. 
2. A page will be displayed on which you can name your alert and also select the frequency (daily, weekly or monthly) for the alert to be run.
3. Click on save alert to save. 
4. To recall, modify or delete alerts click on the my profile button and then select the link add/remove alerts

Citation Alerts

1. These can be set up from the full text of a paper. Click on save as citation alert
2. A page will be displayed on which you can name your alert and also select the frequency (daily, weekly or monthly) for the alert to be run. 
3. Click on save alert to save. 
4. To recall, modify or delete alerts click on the my profile button and then select the link add/remove alerts

Journal Contents Alerts

1. To be alerted when a new issue of a journal becomes available check the box next to "alert me when new journal issues are available". 
2. To recall, modify or delete alerts click on the my profile button and then select the link add/remove alerts
