How do I?

Access MEDLINE

Science Direct offers complimentary access to MEDLINE. Click on the Abstract Databases button on the Science Direct home page. Then click on the hyperlink to Medline’s search facility.

Searching 

You can search across all sources or restrict your search to journals, abstracts databases or Scirus which is a science search engine that searches the whole of the web. Click on the tab to select the type of search you want.

  • Select either basic or advanced search. Basic search enables you to select fields, e.g., title, keyword to search in.
  • Type the terms you want to search for in the text boxes. You can combine terms using the Boolean operators (and, or, not).
  • Limit your search using the subject, dates and sources options.
  • Click on the search button.

Your results will be displayed. The display format can be changed on the results page, as can the means of sorting the results.

From the results page you can:

  • Amend your search.
  • Search within the results, i.e. narrow your search.
  • E-mail results.
  • Access either abstract, full text + links or PDF versions of papers.

NOTE: Searches may produce references to papers/journals/resources which are NOT covered by our licence. If this happens check the NMBL’s catalogue, serials list and e-journal list to see if the title concerned is in stock.

Search History

To retain your searches in order to re-use them during a session you need to ensure that the search history option (at the foot of the search page) is turned on. Any searches you run during the session will be displayed on the search page, you can then combine, re-run, modify or delete searches.

Saving Searches

Having run your search, you can save it for future use by clicking on the save button on the results page. To access saved searches:

  1. On the search page click on the recall search button.
  2. All searches you have saved will be displayed. Select a saved search request.
  3. Select one of the options listed below the box:

Retrieve New Articles Only - To restrict the search to look at only those documents which have been added since your most recent run of the search request.

Retrieve All Articles - To search all available documents using the original search request.

Modify Search - To modify the saved search request (e.g., change the search terms, the fields searched, the sources searched, etc.). If you want to retain the modifications, you must save this search request separately. The option to save this search request is located on the search results page. If you save a modified search, the original saved search request is still saved. You can keep the original search request or delete it.

Delete - To remove the saved search from your saved search requests list.
