ZETOC Guide

How do I?

Accessing Zetoc

Zetoc is available on the Web of Knowledge portal. To access Zetoc you need to register for an Athens user name & password.

If you do not have an Athens user name you can apply for one using the request an Athens user name form on the NMBL web pages. Please print this form, sign and send it in the internal mail to Emma Woodason at the library. Please note passwords are only available for PML/MBA/SAHFOS staff and that registration requires a valid e-mail address.

The Zetoc database:

  • contains details of approximately 20,000 current journals from all disciplines and 16,000 conference proceedings published per year.
  • covers the years from 1993 to date and is updated daily.
  • is fully searchable by author or title keywords and also offers a current awareness service.

Zetoc Alert is a current awareness service which allows you to be e-mailed the table of contents from particular journals or receive details of articles which match pre-defined search criteria such as an author's name or title keywords. These e-mail alerts are sent on the day the new data is loaded into the database.

Zetoc Alerts

1. Click on the Log into Zetoc Alert button or click on the link to go to the no-frames alternative.
2. Log in using your Athens password (the one you use for Web of Science).
3. Enter your e-mail address and a name for your list. You will need this name to modify your list in future.
4. There is the option to include hyperlinks to full records. If you choose to include hyperlinks please note that you will not be able to access all of the electronic articles listed in your alert.
5. Click on the Create button. You will be given confirmation that the list has been created and when it will expire.
6. At the foot of this page it says "The next step is to add some journals by clicking here or add searches by clicking here". Click on the appropriate button.

A split screen will be displayed.

Adding journals to your list

There are three ways to add journals to your list.

1. Select the title from an alphabetical list by clicking on the relevant letter of the alphabet. To select a journal title, click on the Add button next to it. The journal title will be displayed on your list on the left hand side of the screen.
2. If you know all/part of the journal title, type the words in the box and click on Search. Select the title from the results list by clicking on the Add button next to it. The journal title will be displayed on your list on the left hand side of the screen.
3. Select journals by subject category. Journals in Zetoc are grouped according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system, select a subject category and you will be given a list of journal titles in that category. To select your journal title, click on the Add button next to it. The journal title will be displayed on your list on the left hand side of the screen.

Adding searches

1. You can search either by keyword in title or by author.
2. Type the words or name in the boxes, note that to search for words next to each other and for surnames and initials you need to enclose the term in double quotes e.g. "estuarine pollution", "Harvey E".
3. Click on Add to list and your search will be displayed on the left hand side of the screen as an addition to your alert.
