Nuno graduated with a degree in Biology from the University of Porto in 2001 followed by an MSc. In 2006, Nuno started a Ph.D funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). His research made use of satellite and archival telemetry and genetic markers to investigate movements, behaviour and population structure of blue sharks in the North Atlantic. His Ph.D was awarded in 2010 and was supervised by Professor David Sims (MBA), Dr Leslie Noble (University of Aberdeen) and Dr Múrias dos Santos (CIBIO, Portugal).
Nuno is now a postdoctoral researcher and principal investigator working on an FCT grant on the behaviour patterns of large pelagic predators in relation to environment and activities of longline fishing vessels. The work involves satellite tagging shortfin mako and blue sharks and movement analysis of predators and fishing boats. He is also a co-investigator on a project tracking the migratory behaviour of ocean sunfish with Argos and GPS satellite tags.
