Nicolas graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 2004 with a B.Sc Honours degree in Marine Biology. Afterwards he participated in a photo-ID project on great white sharks based in Gansbaai, South Africa, which focused on residency and annual returns of individual white sharks to the Gansbaai coast.
In 2005, Nick started PhD studies at the University of Aberdeen focused on combining molecular markers, such as mtDNA sequencing and microsatellites, with satellite telemetry, to help understand population structuring of sharks across a wide range of spatio-temporal scales. The study species for his PhD was the temperate-water, endothermic porbeagle shark, Lamna nasus. After obtaining his Ph.D in 2009, Nick has been a postdoctoral researcher working on the movement patterns and genetics of diverse animals, from jellyfish to salmon sharks, to try explore the evolution of behaviour.
