Common name: Flat top shell

Latin name: Gibbula umbilicalis.

A type of sea snail (Mollusca)



Key Features

  • Small topshell 1.6 cm high 2.2 cm across.
  • Large round hole on the underside of the shell (umbilicus).
  • Dull greenish grey in colour with reddish-purple broad diagonal stripes.

Where to look:

Found on open rock or in pools.

Effects of warming sea:

Typically southern warm water species extending the range northwards
