John Raven graduated from the University of Cambridge with a BA in Botany in 1963 and a PhD in Botany (Plant Biophysics) in 1967. After research and teaching positions at Cambridge University he moved to the University of Dundee in 1971 and was appointed to a Personal Chair in 1980 and to the Boyd Baxter Chair in 1994. Upon official retirement in 2008 he was appointed Emeritus Professor in the University of Dundee. He was elected FRSE in 1981 and FRS in 1990. His wide-ranging research interests focus on plant and algal ecophysiology, energetics and biogeochemistry, with a major emphasis on marine microalgae and macroalgae, resulting in over 350 peer-reviewed publications. He chaired the panel which produced the Royal Society report on Ocean Acidification in 2005. In addition to, for example, journal editing, chairing Research Council and learned society committees and serving as President of three learned societies, he has taught a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses from 1968 to the present.
