Members of the Marine Biological Association

Access to the library is also available to Individual, Student and Corporate Members of the Marine Biological Association. This includes support for enquiries from experienced NMBL staff, if required, and access to the catalogues. There is a charge for self-service photocopying (currently £4 for 60) and reproduction of material (please see here and ask for details).

Please note that certain material in the Special Collections and from the MBA Archive Collection may not be available. We regret that we may not be able to retrieve items that are in use or stored off site.

Daily rates for external visitors

External visitors who are not members of the MBA are able to arrange a visit by special arrangement with the NMBL. There is a charge of £12 per day for access to the NMBL, and this fee will include basic staff support for initial enquiries and access to the catalogues.

Further charges apply. These are:

• Self-service photocopying – currently £4 for a card providing 60 copies;
• Reproduction of archival documents and images – from £5 per item. Please see here and ask for details;
• Commercial access – rates on application;
• Research support by experienced NMBL staff (beyond the initial enquiry) – rates on application.

This daily rate option is primarily offered to access material held in the MBA Archive Collection (see details of the archival collection here); please note that the NMBL encourages interested researchers to join the MBA and take advantage of the wide range of benefits this provides.

You can view details of the collection here. In addition the NMBL can provide the following:

• Majority of the holdings on-site
• Experienced staff available to assist you
• Extensive indexes to the collections including the early literature
• Growing database of over 267 700 records, which includes the entire book collection, records for selected articles within serials, book chapters, reports and conference proceedings
• Serials database searchable by country of origin, words in the title or ISSN.
