Director of the Marine Biological Association

Applications are invited for the post of Director of the Marine Biological Association (MBA).

The Marine Biological Association is a Learned Society defined and recognised by Royal Charter, with the Mission to promote scientific research into all aspects of life in the sea and to disseminate to the public the knowledge gained.

The MBA (www.mba.ac.uk), based at its Citadel Hill Laboratory in Plymouth, has a long-standing international reputation for scientific excellence. The MBA has pursued programmes of fundamental and strategic research and of knowledge dissemination in marine life sciences since its foundation. Substantial grant income is received from a wide range of sources.

The Director is responsible for scientific, strategic and executive leadership of the MBA to deliver the objects and powers defined under the Royal Charter, spanning research and knowledge dissemination. The ideal candidate will have a strong aptitude and record in organisational leadership with experience of managing budgets and preferably of managing organisational change, excellent communication and negotiation skills, and a strong knowledge of marine science organisational structures in the UK. The Director will ideally provide an example of scientific leadership through the delivery of a personal research programme, with external funding and in a key scientific challenge area of the MBA Research Strategy. The Director is also expected to have a strong interest or involvement in knowledge dissemination including delivery of services to members, public understanding of science, education and training, marine policy and consultancy.

The post will be based at the MBA in Plymouth UK. Salary will be within the range £80K to £90K per annum. PhD degree is a requirement.  Applications will close on 31 October 2017
